Do you think this is a vintage Chanel jacket?

I was wondering if anyone could shed light on this find please? I think it is a genuine vintage Chanel jacket but it has lost it's label. It has the double logo buttons, but I realise that in itself does not a genuine Chanel make. However, this I can tell you. It is definitely vintage. It is lovely quality fabric with weight. It is made in panels and I think may have holes where a weighting chain could possibly have been removed for cleaning? But I don't feel a chain there in the hem. The stitching is very neat and lovely hand stitching. However I am not an expert in Chanel. I would love your opinions. There is some damage to the lining on one of the underarms where the stitching has come open and it needs cleaning but is overall in very nice conditon with no stains or holes on the main jacket, just a little to the lining in the underarm area.

I am not a novice to vintage clothing so I know this is an old piece but I haven't found a Chanel before. My background is I have loved and collected vintage on and off for over 30 years. I got married 20 years ago in a vintage 50s full length floral dress (which no longer fits but I have!) I have re kindled my passion for and collection of vintage and am just about to take the plunge with an Etsy shop having sold on ebay as more of a hobby before.

I would love to know what you think. Have I found a genuine Chanel or an old copy? Thanks in advance for any comments. I have enjoyed reading other threads and sharing your enthusiasm so I hope you don't mind me asking and I realise the chat is not an authentication I just feel excited in case I have got something really interesting.

Oh, the more I look online the more I think it may not be a Chanel although it is very nicely made. There are no front pockets - should there always be? and I am not sure the double Cs on the button are quite right. Well I don't know. Feeling a bit deflated now!

Good morning, Robin64 :hiya:

there are a few hints that let us know this is not a true Chanel:
*the way the neckline is puckered, rather than smoothly finished
*the way the trim has been sewn on

as to having CC buttons, unfortunately, that is not an absolute indicator of Chanel manufacture; as an example, many years ago I worked in a designer consignment boutique, and we had to hang all of our Chanel garments up high along our walls to prevent the buttons from being stolen.

Putting the brand/maker issue aside I'm not sure it's old enough to be considered vintage yet- I think it's 1980s at the earliest, but the shape makes me more inclined towards mid-late 90's.
The Navy trim is puckering the fabric all over which makes me think it was either hastily sewn on or the jacket has been machine washed and shrunk around it. The way it is curved round the corners rather than folding them in at right angles, and just tucked and tacked at the ends also makes me think this was added later - possibly for costume purposes.
I would be wary that the damage at the bottom of the lining could be from moths, it would be best to freeze the jacket to prevent any further possible damage.
It does have nicely bound buttonholes. Can you show the thread used to attach the buttons? Also a shot of the whole lining would show if it had labels or not, and what size they were if they have been removed.

*cross posted with Mary :)

oh thanks. It's hand made in a quality fabric and yes things like the button holes are very nicely done. I agree about the braiding although the actual braiding itself is lovely close up and doesn't look cheap. I thought one C on the buttons looks very slightly bigger than the other. Should they always be exactly the same size? Thanks for taking the time to answer anyway.
