Do you wear your vintage?

I have just acquired an exceptional 1950s emerald green taffeta evening gown and I’m considering wearing it to an event. However the fact that it’s older than my father and that there’s a little seam strain already is giving me pause to reconsider this. What do other collectors think? Are collections just for preservation and looking at? Is one allowed to take an old gown out on the town?

Hi Cath - some may think differently than me, but I always love seeing people out wearing their vintage. It's a shame to me to keep something hidden away in the closet. With that being said, depending on the amount of seam stress you may be able to either reinforce those seams in order to wear her out, otherwise, possibly let the seams out if they are too tight when wearing. Hope this helps and I'd love to see your dress!

I think the majority of the members here provide vintage clothing that is meant to be worn. However, you do need to take care with items that are beginning to show damage. You may consider wearing foundation garments as was part of a 50s wardrobe or have the seams taken out to help with fit.

Oh yes! Sounds like a beauty worthy of taking it out on the town! If there is some seam stress you might want to consider having it reinforced by a seamstress (just realizing that contains those two words :)). In this cookie-cutter world of mass produced clothing, you'll certainly stand out in something uniquely vintage and beautiful. If you decide to wear it out, please stop back and show us some photos!
