Does Anyone Know Vintage Furniture?

This may be a little off topic but I need help identifying this table . I am no furniture buff. It was given to me about 3 years ago.. I don't know if it's vintage. I'm guessing not, but it could be. Someone mentioned that the top of the table might be. The base is carved wood and the top is also wood with some sort of black finish, maybe lacquer..with gold leaf etching. I'm looking to sell it locally; it's been sitting in storage because it's not my style, altho its lovely. I want to know how to describe it. If anyone can tell me the style, or era that would be great. Trying to ascertain its value.

I am in no way an expert, but that black and gold is very 50s/60s Mid Century Modern. However, the base is not. I can't imagine it being anything other than a marriage - lovely vintage top, modern shabby chic (awful I think, in this context, excuse me for saying so) base. Actually, maybe the top is more Hollywood Regency, but we don't see so much of that over here in the UK, so I haven't really pinned the style down (except I know I love it).

I don't think it's a marriage, but of course it could be. I don't see Hollywood Regency in the top. I think it's a bit too large scale/bold, but I agree that the base is Italianate. I am quite sure the table does not date to Mid-Century, but it is hard to date this table from photos. However, assuming that the top and the base went together originally, it could have been made quite recently - or maybe enough years ago to meet the 20 year criteria for vintage but it's not super old.

It's a pedestal table (meaning the base is a pedestal as opposed to having the legs attached to the top.) The style is a modern adaptation of "Italian/Provincial/ Renaissance." The legs of the pedestal are based on the style of legs and bases introduced during the Italian Renaissance. Italian and French Provincial furniture which featured antiqued finishes and decorative motifs and delicate cabriole legs) was really popular in the 1950s and early 1960s but the scale was much more delicate. The base of the table is machine made/turned. The base coat of the finish on the pedestal is/was probably sprayed with white paint and then rubbed to look like it's antiqued. You can see some over spray on the photo of the foot. I think the gold color laurel leaves might be decals that have been applied perhaps as a ring and then the top clear coated but it's hard to tell from the photos. I don't see gold leaf. The metal glide in the foot indicates that it is fairly recent as well.

How wide and high is it? I'm not sure if it's an accent/center table or a dining table.

You might want to visit some second hand furniture stores in your area to see if you find something similar. I think it was probably purchased from a retail furnitiure store within the past 20 years or so. Have you asked whoever gave it to you when and where they got it?

Thanks, everyone. Not sure why the pics came out sideways. Anyway no I didn't meet the woman who gave me the table. She gave a bunch of things to my landlord to give me, so I have no info. Its 40" across.About 12" high. So, like a coffee table. It was in storage almost immediately and I finally cleared everything out, and now it's sitting in my living room. I would like to sell it. Can anyone offer a price suggestion? Going to throw it up on Craigslist. There is an vintage/modern secondhand store not too far from me. Maybe I will take the photos to them and ask them for a price. Maybe they'll buy it. I just want it gone. lol

Thank you, Liza. With that site you have to mail in photographs. I took the pics I had up to the local secondhand antique store. They told me it was 1960s. Offered me $50. If I triple or quadruple that I think I have my selling price. lol :)

I agree with Linn's comments and think it's more modern than that, last 20 years I would think.

You say the top has gold leaf etching but I see a mother of pearl finish, or faux MOP - and the top doesn't really go with the elaborate base, or perhaps it's just that they're different styles. I see a chipboard base, which points to more modern as older, vintage furniture tends to be more solid wood.

Personally I think it would be worth investigating what wood is under the paint on the base it could be something interesting and often gives a clue to were and when it was made, the triangle wedge on the feet look a little odd in my opinion for feet so I think that worth more investigation as if they are contemporary or added on. I just have a feeling it not giving up the whole story yet.
