I have this fur stole and I don't know what kind of fur this is...please help :-)
-the fur is medium length...not long and full
-its very smooth, glossy and soft to the touch...not coarse
-made by I. R. Fox New York
-the fur is black on the surface (may be dyed) but then reddish brown close to the skin
-there are shiny (almost silvery) fibers in the fur...the fur is relatively shiny

I attached some pictures but I know that fur is hard just by pics...I did the best I could :-\

Any thoughts would be helpful!

It looks and almost sounds like it may be dyed sheared beaver - hard to tell without handling. You say it is "soft to the touch".
Sheared beaver is not just soft, it is an exceptionally soft fur.

A possibility is that it is what used to be called Hudson seal. Hudson seal was not seal (despite the name) but was another fur such as rabbit, nutria, small mammal, etc. dyed and sheared to imitate seal. It was almost always dyed black as yours looks to be also. Your fur looks very much like it to me. It is not dense enough to be beaver. Hudson seal was very popular in the mid 20th century and your stole looks to be from that time.

I like it!

My first thought was sheared beaver too but Barbara is likely right about Hudson seal which I always thought was either muskrat or skunk. Judging from the reddish color, your stole could be sheared muskrat.
