Okay Hollis, here ya go!
I haven't photographed any pre 1920 hats yet, but here are some highlights from my post 1920 collection.

How cool! I had hoped you would post some goodies.

I love them all!

But especially the third one top row, the second one second row, and the first one third row.

And the knitting needle hat makes me giggle.

Well that all just took my breath away! and more pretty ladies!!!

Must have been a very unique lady to wear the one with the knitting needles.

I love that off white one with the buttons! And the hot pink one! And the embroidered one and.............

Great hats! The knitting needles are so cute!

I love hats but can never find any to fit me, women's hats all seem to be one-size-fits-all, and they DON'T! Did hats back then come in sizes?

Great manni heads there Jonathan, they look fabulous.

Deb

Yep they came in sizes then - 21,21 1/2, 22, 22 1/2. Size 23 is the largest Iv'e seen. I did find a 20s cloche tagged Large Head Size and by golly, it was! It came down to my nose, but I wear a 21 1/2.

Deb; A lot of it has to do with how the hat is worn, and your hairstyle. I have seen pics of older women in the 1920s wearing cloches on top of their head! It looks ridiculous, but they weren't into cutting their hair, and continued to wear a fashionable hats in an unfashionable manner. Queen Mary continued to wear toques throughout the 20s and 30s because she refused to dump the late Edwardian hairstyle.

THe cloches are the ones that need to fit the best, most of the 30s'40s hats will fit if you put them on your head correctly and have the right 'do'.
Don't forget, hat pins were around for a reason too, to anchor the hats through your hair, but you pretty well have to have an upsweep of some kind for a hat pin to work.
