Early 1900\'s Velvet Jacket & Skirt...need some help, please

Hello and thank you all in advance. I rarely have anything this vintage so I know I am out of my league and have one question...probably more as the day goes on. I have just started my research and the pics are without any prep....just to get going.....

This was purchased from an elderly friend of the family who has been clearing out her husband's aunts house....born and raised in the same place. She came across this plum velvet jacket and skirt set that I believe is from "around" 1916.

The jacket has been crudely altered and creates a scoop of the jacket in the back:

Should I take the alterations down or leave them alone? Thanks for any assistance and advise....Gail

I would take them out and staem it so the jacket can hang as it should.

I think you are close on the date - let's see how it looks after you get that crude stitiching out!

Thanks Hollis. I will work on this carefully....Yikes! It's going to require lots of time and attention. I hope to have it ready to list in a few weeks. I am also working this morning on taking non-prep pictures of another earlier suit....will show that momentarily.
