Early 1930s? What DO you call these balls?

Hi Everyone!!
Well, I have this dress. I am a tad stumped with the age. I believe it is early 1930s? It has an Arthur Weiss Original label. I date it to the early 30s because of the tiny back neck zipper and the side zipper. When did they start using side zippers? Some of my other 30s items have had hook and eye or snaps.
Also I am not sure what to call this treatment. Ball thingies will not work... hanging balls... um I do not think so.
What would you call them?
Thanks everyone!
Michelle

ooh, i like it! i immediately thought pom pom's, and don't know what else you could use.
as for the zip thing, i thought the back neck and side zipper was more late 40's but i am not really the person to be giving date advice! it's a great dress though whenever it dates from! :)

OH MY GOSH............. OH MY GOSH..........
I LOVE that when that happens! That is the most fun! Well that dates it for me! *smile* A friend of mine suggested boule fringe detail... when in doubt use French :)
Lizzie you are a goddess, thank you SO much!

pompoms certainly sound better dangling balls *smile* think I may go with the French wording. We shall see...

Thanks so much!!

Oh Wow!! That is so cool that you have the advert for the same dress
Lizzie!

This dress is wonderful Michelle. I remember waaaaaaaaay back on
VCA, one of the members had a dress with this pom pom type trim
and I think one of the suggestions then was "dingle berries". Not the
proper term, but hey, it was illustrative.

ummmmm I grew up with that (dingle berries) having a different meaning. I will NOT explain it on this board *smile* It would be unbecomming!

:)

Those are dingle balls, not dingle berries! Michelle, "dingle berries" must mean the same thing 'round here as they do where you live :hysterical:

That is one fine dress, and the Vogue reference is a wonderful thing to have to go with it :)

November 1, 1946 Vogue

The ad reads:

"Pendant trimming accents the shoulders and peplum in Kaluki, a new rayon crepe by Oscar Hayman." Arthur Weiss Original, Chicago, Illinois

That is cool that you will have the Vogue ad and description.

That should add some value to the listing.

I always call these dingle balls in my listings and my buyers seem to recognize the term. Those side metal zippers with the short metal back zipper are commonly found in mid-40's dresses. It's a good way to date them!

Thank you so much for your help everyone!
With a special shout out to Lizzie, my goodness Lizzie that is the absolute dream come true. Thank you SO much!!!
I just want to technically ask if it is ok to use the picture you have in your write-up, I do not think I can put a link to your auctions can I...? I don't know the rules about that. I will figure it out.
I am thinking of dingle balls but I may just stick with the French..
We shall see, nice large size so hopefully some interest will ensue..

Thanks once again!!
