Elbow seams

Hi!

I have several older pieces with seams at the elbows. Do you know what that is called? Or are they just called "elbow seams?" I'm assuming it was done to keep the fabric from stretching at the elbow. Am I right?

Hi Delores! It's called a sleeve dart, and is a way of creating a fitted sleeve:
