Elgin Dress info

Hi there...

This is my first post beyond my introduction post.

So... I found this gown made by Elgin Dress. It is difficult to date but looks '70's... no union label but it may have been removed and it certainly has that "feel".

When I did a search for dresses from Elgin Dress, I discovered a few dresses with the same label being touted as being from the 60s and 70s at a few vintage online shops, but when I look up the company history... it appears to have been formed in 1982. Im confused!

Now of course, there are plenty of dresses made in the early 80s that still have that 70s feel, but they are still not from the 70's... are these shops intentionally misleading? Do they know something I don't and maybe the company info is wrong? Or do they just not know what they are talking about? *smile* Anal retentive minds want to know!!!

I have similar issues often and never know where to turn.

Would someone be so kind as to advise?

Thank you!

I tried to find more information on the company but was not able to obtain information under trademarks. It does appear that the company did indeed first formed as a registered business in 1982. As for sellers listing this label as 70's, it may be because they too felt their dress felt and looked like it was from the time period and did not dig deeper to make sure their dating was correct other than seeing another seller selling the brand. This is when I think my art history professor saying still holds true: "Trust but verify."

Another thought is sometimes businesses start earlier than the time they registered as a business. Sometimes I have called the business hoping for more information when I am in a quandary. You may want to contact one of the names to see if they can help you when their business began.

That date could be the year the company became Ltd. They don't always do this straight away. Depending on resources it can be several years.

Does your label say Ltd?

I did not buy the dress, but let me see if I can get a picture of it...

Sorry for the delay... super busy with my "other" job preparing for an event next week.

I have a new question though...will post a new thread for that one.

Does this not go against the rules below?:

Those with "free" public forum access are NOT Trade-Members and are referred to as forum members or registered guests.

Only Trade Members are allowed to post items that are currently for sale or to post links to items for sale or to retail websites.

Guests (non-members) are permitted to post images of items for the purpose of education or questions - but ONLY of items that are not currently for sale.

I apologize... I thought it was ok since it was not linked to any location and I was not attempting top sell it.
