Elizabethan Costume

I've just been looking up info on Elizabethan fashions and have found this wonderful website I wanted to share:

Elizabethan Costume Page

There are lots of detailed sections on clothes, jewelery, hats, fabric.. and even how to make a ruff! ...which I will be trying out at some point. :)

They also decribe all sorts of people of different status and location, and all using specific people as examples.

Unfortunately one of the examples is Lettice Knollys who I can't stand! And to wind me up more they have given her her title of Countess of Leicester. :( :( Lettice Knollys was the grandaughter of Anne Boleyn's sister and Henry VIII - so had an appearance much like Elizabeth but was younger, and she had led a much happier life so she used all her Boleyn charms in a very playful flirty manner as Elizabeth could not (with the knowledge that her mother and her mother's cousin had been killed by her father for their flirty behaviour. She had been in great danger because her sister Queen Mary's husband flirted openly with her. And a man she loved had been put to death for trying to marry her).

She deeply angered Elizabeth in many ways with her outrageous behaviour, and Elizabeth found it difficult to watch a younger image of herself wandering around flirting with her favoruites at court who Elizabeth knew she could not marry.

Eventually Lettice ended up marrying the love of Elizabeth's life - Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester - in secret, and when Elizabeth found out she was so enraged that she slapped her in full view of the whole court. Dudley had been Elizabeth's closest friend from childhood, being imprisoned in the Tower of London with her, giving her money to keep her household with when she was banished from court, risking his life in support of her and being the one friend she could trust in a very dangerous world. Unfortunately she could not marry him as she had to marry another Royal if anyone, and marrying him would have angered her people and all of the foreign royals who tried to court her. To make matters worse, his wife died falling down the stairs and everyone wondered if he had murdered her in order to be with Elizabeth.

So after all that I really hate Lettice for marrying Robert Dudley. And now she's ruining this perfectly enchanting website by being on it. :(

Lizzie, that paperdoll thingy is fab, especially the responses it gives when you do something wrong! I ended up at a page on Elizabethan make-up following the links from that page... and Lettice appeared again! She's haunting me, LOL!

I'd complain about Lettice, but I doubt anyone besides me would be so fierecely devoted to the Queen 400 years after her death that they'd remove someone that displeased her so greatly. I could complain about the make-up thing though, seeing as it goes on and on at great length about how perfect Lettice was and then eventually says that Lettice was considered perfect because she so closely resembled the Queen. It's a shame I don't like the woman. I think her mother was fab and was very pleased to see she was buried in Westminster too when I visited.

Sara, that's fabulous about Samuel's grand-daughter! I'm sure she'd know more than us about the missing information. I'd love to see this section on the great un-heralded designers when it's finished, it sounds wonderful! :)

I think one of the things I love about the Dollyrocker range is how it draws on romanticized historical fashions, but the most Elizabethan dress I own is an evening dress by Hardy Amies that has an amazingly strict built in corset at the bodice and then a *huge* skirt with wire netting underneath to make it stand out. I haven't had a chance to wear it to a big event yet, but I try it on ocasionally and have the urge to yell "off with their head!" and stuff. LOL! I'm actually hoping that I'll get invited to a costume ball at some point so I can wear it and be Good Queen Bess... better get making a ruff and practicing the make-up so I'll be ready when the invite appears!

And yes I am in the north of England. Very near Leeds where all the nasty people seem to be from at the moment. :(

Senti has a great treatment on dollyrockers in the label resource, but am looking forward to the behind the scenes info that your awesome contact has, Sara!

well...perhaps not...but your letter could be so unexpected that it could grace the bulletin boards in the office of whomever is behind that site for many years to come
