Asked about it over on the NAVT board....2 days, nothing but "looks embroidered". And yes, it is. I was hoping to know if the type of embroidery has a name.....pretty much ANY info on the style of bag, detailing, a date.....any help would be great! It folds together & snaps shut, faille interior, one side pocket for a small mirror, marked GENUINE SARAZZIN Made in France.

Anything anyone can tell me about it, and some general idea of dating, would be fabulous....I've been sitting on getting it listed and need to get it done soon. Thanks!!! Ang

Ang, I'm hardly an expert on embroidery stitches, but the thing that came to mind in seeing your purse is tambour work, which I've seen a lot with beading in French/Belgian purses. Here's an example I found of just the embroidery--it does look like yours, though yours is amazingly dense:

Maybe it's a combination of tambour work with another stitch (for the background)?

About dating--my hunch is 20s, but I could be way off, so hopefully an early purse maven will be along soon...

Dense really is a perfect word to describe how heavily this is embroidered....not an inch left exposed, and its done thickly and tightly. Dense! Thanks for that link, it may be tambour....I'll dig around more. I got a book on handbags but its BEADED bags, not this type of course!

Thanks for your help! Ang

this looks to be a French stitched clutch bag or from Belgium..its probably got a piece of fabric or leather to pop the palm of ones hand through? then its 1920-1932...one could hold the bag whilst at a tea dance!!

there are many in that style which are considerably earlier,

but upon reflection .....the printed name on interior and the 'handmade' worry me and this makes me think 40-50's...l havent seen any pre war bags with this tag on...

No strap, this is very small, almost wallet sized. Just folds over & snaps shut. I think silk stitch is what I'm finding closest in the book I have (that I thought only had beaded bags, but it does have some fabric). The date is totally beyond me, I have found some online with the same type stamp as old as 20s so I have no idea!

I have been doing crewel and needlepoint since I was a child. This doesn't look like silk floss to me but cotton. The stitches appear to be a seed stitch, french knots and outline chain stitch if I am recalling my terms correctly. Hope this helps.

yes to 'mcgrawandmcqueen' the terms you quote are the same names as stitches l would say....

I was self-taught with crewel & floss embroidery and needlepoint since I was 8 (plus crochet, etc.) and Lorinda is correct about many of the stitches.

I see lots of background fill with split stitch (which is what it's used for) in addition to the outline stitch and french knots. It looks like cotton thread, but not glossy floss. At first one would think there are satin stitches used with all those flowers, but I really don't see them.

I don't know what a "silk stitch" is - never heard of it. If there is a special term for this "wallpaper" effect, I'm not familiar with it.

Very nice!

Thanks, everyone....any idea on how to date it? I think Sara's on to something with that "hand made" part of the stamp......Ang
