I really need your help with this one - this beautiful bag is totally outside my realm of experience & knowledge.

First, how old is it?

<img src="http://image.inkfrog.com/pix/bigchief/embrvfg.jpg" width=640 height=1074>

Any idea of its approximate value?

Thanks!

Carolyn

Carolyn, I have a feeling this is quite old. Very baroque and incredibly
wonderful! I'm totally guessing here, but I wonder if this is pre 1900s?

Hollis, Barbara or Jonathan should be able to tell you for sure.

What a wonderful find!

Sue

It' s just a guess, but I am thinking Teens to 1920s because of the jade and the lines of the metal work. That looks like crewel work rather than embroidery.

As to value - I haven't a clue.

Hollis

I am going to agree with Hollis that it is crewel work most likely, and agree with Hollis on date, but my guess would be pushing into the later end of her guesstimate range.

The red outlines and that orange flower that looks 3 D really look like it (crewel) to me. Crewel work feels slightly "yarnier" and thicker than embroidery (no, that is not a technical term LOL)

Oh yes - it's definitely crewel work, with lots of chain stitching and French knots. I was using the term embroidery in its broadest/most all-encompassing sense, thinking crewl is a type of embroidery - yes? No? Maybe? :)

Carolyn

Yes, crewel work is a type of embroidery - usually done with a bit heavier
of a yarn.

Carolyn, were you able to find out anything more on the date of this
bag? I'm still getting a late 1800s/early 1900s vibe from it.

Sue

I have to agree with Hollis. I have a lot of jewelry from the 1920s and the metal work on this looks almost exactly the same. Also, there was a big trent for jade/faux jade at that time. It's really gorgeous! I know that beaded purses from the era can sell for $200 or more if they're really nice. I'm not sure about something like this though.
