Enid Collins purse.

Hello! I need help dating an Enid Collins purse! I have contacted someone through eBay, who wrote the guide. (hasn't replied to me yet.) Plus looking all over the internet.

This one is an oddball to me. I can't figure it out! So, I am hoping you ladies here can help me!

This purse is painted inside, and out. (First mystery) The "signature" is on the bottom (second mystery), it has a pineapple, butterfly, flowers and starfish. The colouring says 50's AND 60's to me.

I am at a loss!

Thank you ALL!! (in advance!)

Thank you all!

I have to say -- the coloring and the SHAPE of those flowers says late 60's to me.

Very cute! It's very different from most of the Collins purses I've seen! I don't think I've ever seen such a big "signature" on one. Maybe this is one of those kits and someone just decided to put her name on it?

Hmmmm very curious!

Thank you for your reply!

My insides say 60's as well.

This doesn't look like a kit, to me. Mainly, because they would have to have a stencil for the name on the bottom.

(Recently, a fish brooch was listed on eBay. It had the same colouring and texture of the purse, but no date.)

I have two others, both with jewelled outsides, on a stained/varnished wood. This one is painted inside and out. Very professionally painted. I haven't seen anything, yet, where the purse was painted inside, as well as out.

I dunno!

Thank you!!

Sincerely, Sandi

Edited for clarity, and misspelling!

I think thats one of her oldest ones, late 50s to early 60s? When she was still on her own without being involved with a manufacturer. Let me grab the pics and send them to a friend here in town who is a serious collector (she has a 40s style tropical barkcloth and rattan decorated sunroom with deco undertones called the "Miami Room".....one whole wall is Enid Collins bags!!).

I'll let you know if she answers, not sure she'll be online over the weekend.

It wil be interesting to hear what a die-hard Enid fan says. I think it's a delicious bag, no matter the age. I like the simple Enid styles, with a minimum of the fake jewels and tokens glued on.

Do the applied decorations seem to be papier-mache'? That's what it looks like to me, and if so, it was done between 66 and 68. These are hard to find in good condition and usually sell for more than the regular jeweled ones.

I hadn't seen that site.

Thanks Fuzzylizzie!

Yeah, the pineapple and such, look papier-mache.

This box is in near mint condition too.

EC started out making purses in her home, this is one of those bags. It is prior to her receiving her contract with Neiman Marcus and to her hiring staff and owning her own manufacturing business.

If it's in near mint condition it could fetch between $300 up to as much as $800 or $900. I've seen one just like it go for over $600 on ebay last summer.

And yes, it IS papier mache'.

Love the bag.

Lizzie, thanks for that site link.
I found a bag I have on it that is missing a few jewels and someone had glued a NICKEL in the center of the flower.:icon_wall:

I've still not figured how to remove it as it's set in a metal flower.

Maybe you could lay a damp washcloth on it for a minute or so, to see if it lifts.

Can you tell if it's glued with Elmer's?

I believe Elmer's is water soluble. If you can remove the entire setting, then you may be able to remove the coin, and re-set it.

Just a thought.

La Princessa: So far, it is at $56, on eBay.

I have been hemming and hawing over pulling it.

If it is an early one, I may just pull the auction, and put it in a safe place for another 40 years!

I don't know what to do!

It's SO FABULOUS, I LOVE it, but I wouldn't really use it. Considering it's condition, I wouldn't WANT to use it.

The auction is just not looking very pretty right now. :(

l shall be looking in on that one...thats a lovely bag....thanks ofr sharing!!

if your use rid is la princessa, it wont give it to me, says its a multiple user id??? can you clarify as l'd like to watch this listing..

grummphh, dont you just hate it when that carrot is taken away from your nose!!

Hello!

Yes, I ended it!

SADLY.

I feel like I need more information on this purse. It's not something I am familiar with, and I want to know more.

Plus, I don't know if I want to get rid of it quite yet.

I have seen a lot of the jewelled ones, not many of the papier mache' ones.

Until I know more, I won't re-list it.
