Hi I'm looking for help on what era this men's jacket is and what it would be called please ? Or what it's function was. Feels like something for an undertaker! If it helps the likely origin is German.

Thanks for all your help.

I would call it a topcoat or overcoat. Topcoats are lighter in weight and knee length or shorter. Overcoats are of heavier fabrics and knee length or longer. There are not enough clues in your photos for me to make a guess at era.

As Alice has said, it would be helpful to show us more photos to try to be accurate in dating or assessing the style.

From what I can see, it appears to be an early 20th century man's frock coat. Looks Edwardian era. If you can lay it out so we can see the shape that would be helpful, especially the waist line area and the back. To me it does not look like a top coat, but looks more like a frock coat. A frock coat would not be worn over another coat but worn by itself.

It may be a fraternal frock coat, worn by a member of some organization. But it may just be a simple black frock coat with no ties to any group.

How cool that would be if it is an early 20th century frock coat! This is an era I have no experience with. I'm glad others, who know more about early 20th c. vintage are looking at your coat.

Sure I'll get a photo of the back and front laid flat in the next couple of days. There aren't any labels. The back has two buttons either side of a flap/vent - not sure of the technical term sorry!

Fraternal organisation makes a fair bit of sense because I bought more than one of these.

Thanks again

Another vote for early 20th century frock coat.

Have you had a look inside the interior pocket? Sometimes you can find tailor's labels in there and if you're super lucky, it will have the name of the man it was made for and a date.

Excellent thanks everyone, I will review tomorrow (off to see family today) and check the pockets and get some more photos.

Right so sorry for the delay, here are the back pics. I checked the pockets and on another jacket and I'm afraid there was just nothing at all.
