Era of men's leather trench coat

Hi I'd totally appreciate your help identifying the era of this coat. It was sold to be as 40s but I'm wondering if it's later. The buckle says Made in Germany on it. Hopefully I've provided enough photos!

Thanks in advance!

Well, that is a handsome coat. I agree it has a more modern look, perhaps is could be 1980s.

What struck me is the quality and look of the actual leather itself. I would expect a 1940s or 1950s leather to be heavier and thicker, more like a horsehide leather in its look.

I did a Google search for the bws lederbekleidung and got several hits - all vintage coats or jackets. The label, when shown is similar but as Cin mentioned there are differences. Most of the hits are in German but there is one from eBay that you can translate into English.

Germany was reunited in 1990 so perhaps it is early '90s. If the coat were from the 1980s the buckle would be marked either W. Germany or GDR - not Made in Germany.

Good point about the *quality* of leather... this one's smoother than the 50s leathers.

True Linn... that wall came down in 89.

Hi everyone thanks so much for your input! When I did some google searches, I didn't use any English words so I pulled up a number of sellers, mainly in Germany it seemed. The handful I found which showed the exact same coat said mid century although one interestingly said a police coat in the 60s. Now I never believe just one old selling listing, but there were a few which I found interesting. BTW I used google translate to copy and paste text to translate it.

It looks in really good condition because prior to taking the photos, I spent a lot of time with leather conditioner on it! You should have seen the state originally! I don't know enough about leather to say how thick it is, but it's bloody heavy!

As I have it in front of me, I have the benefit of looking closer and I just don't feel 80s fits. That doesn't mean I am thinking 40s. I think it is some kind of utility/uniform as there seems to be quite a few around, all identical other than different colours. I'm afraid it still feels as a mystery to me so I'm going to do some further research. Thanks again for all your time and help with this.
