European size tag

I just came across a dress that might or might not be '50s. The only tag in is a small red "38" along the back collar. The zipper is metal but seems to have a newer type pull, so not a really good clue there. Were there the European type sizes like that in the '50s?
Thanks

Hi, european sizing goes back further than the 50's, it just means that the garment came from europe. I have seen several traditional costumes from europe however that retain an older style of manufacturing that can make them look as if they are vintage when they are far more recent. They are usually made up of several parts and when seperated are not necessarily recognised as part of a costume.
If you would like help dating the garment please do post photos.
