Evans Fur Jacket: Age and Type

Hi,
I just joined the forum and I have a fur jacket that my grandmother gave to me when her sister passed away. I am trying to ascertain the age and composition.

It does not have a FLA tag so I am guessing that it is pre-1951 but I did not think that fur jackets were popular back then.

In my uneducated opinion it looks like chocolate mink. The seam is coming undone in one place, which allowed me to see that it is indeed real fur.

Also, if anyone knows of somewhere in Indiana where I could get it appraised and repaired I would love get some ideas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Josiah,

Welcome to our forum. Your jacket is a brown mink fur jacket, it looks like natural ranch mink, the pelts have been let out in a horizontal pattern which is very nice, and based on the overall style(length, collar, sleeve length, buttons, lining) I would date this jacket to the 60s.

Furs made in the US were only required to have invoicing with the true name of the fur type per the fur products labeling act which was passed in 1951 and went into effect in 1952.

The Fur Authority label was later introduced in the US in 1956 and assured consumers that their furs were manufactured under fair labor standards.
Not too long after though the rules of the fur products labeling act changed offering more flexibility, not requiring the fur authority label to be sewn into fur garments but the rule saying the true name of the fur still had to be listed on invoicing.
For this reason if you have a fur garment that has a fur authority label sewn in you know the garment was made in or after 1956 in the US but if there is no fur authority label you cannot be sure the garment was made earlier.

I am not sure where you are in Indiana but there is a furrier located in Carmel, Indiana called Day Furs who offers fur services and they may be able to provide appraisals as well as repair.
