Ever Heard of Ernest Newman?

I have this 1950s silk taffeta gown by Ernest Newman of Beverly Hills. I'm having trouble finding out anything about him other than the fact that he was referred to as a couturier. The work in this dress is superb and is on par with the Maxwell Schieff gowns I've had. Does anyone know anything more about this designer?

Although the textile in this 1960 image is apparently a different material, I think it is otherwise the same gown as yours.

It is an Ernest Newman gown and the description with the photo says: "...a formal gown of violet and moss green warp-printed silk ottoman beaded in golden threads. Designed by Ernest Newman, the gown features an arched hemline."

It also seems to have the same winged bodice treatment with the same small straps.

I found this snippet referring to the famous dancer Louise Brooks; "Musical Plaints." Chicago Daily News, September 18, 1934. (United States) " . . . Louise Brooks and Dario (the former in exquisite gowns designed by Ernest Newman)." Scroll down;

So, I thought this might suggest Ernest Newman designed costumes and I found a reference that he was credited as a Costume Designer for the 1955 film "New York Confidential."

I hope we can gather more information on this designer.

Is the arched hemline supported Jody? Lovely dress.

Thank you for those bits of info. Judging by what I've found, he was active from the 30s into the 70s. Another forgotten designer.

Hi. he is my boyfriend's grandfather. I just Ernest's portfolio and googled his name to see if I could find any of his works for sale and voila. How exciting.
