Integrity Toys did a 16" doll size version of this for the last collection of Gene dolls that they sold at Gene's "Farewell" convention. I never knew this was based on a real outfit until I read about Charles James on these forums. Even this small version uses an amazing amount of fabric.
This, like all of James' creations, is stunning! Charles James is one of my favorites, I love the architecture of his pieces. The Met's exhibition of his work this past year was a wonderful show! Did you go?
Sorry, Claire, to hijack your thread, but: Karin, are you a Gene collector also?
I had a friend who did their marketing, way back when, and she gave me several dolls. They are so nicely made, I think. Quickie photo of some (most) of mine...
Wow, Amy, that's a beautiful collection! I have all sorts of fashion dolls in my collection, though about 90% of them are Barbie dolls. Gene was the first of the bigger dolls in my collection, and I have a few of them, though not from the very first years, but I do have more outfits that I put on other dolls as well. They're currently all still boxed up, maybe I get around to taking them out tomorrow. The quality of the Ashton-Drake dolls and outfits was gorgeous, and I know they had a thing for copying couture outfits from way back when. There used to be a website that had all this info, but it's long gone. Here's a photo of "Stardust" Gene in her "Butterfly" gown.
The "Stardust" convention was a beautiful event, lots of fun, with of course an Old Hollywood theme (including dressing up in the evenings - I took along several vintage dresses).
