Fabric content of FAB brocade coat

Greetings!

I'm wondering what the fabric content is on this lovely gold and lavender brocade 60's coat. I did a test on the light gold colored crepe lining and it's silk. The outer fabric has metallic threads in gold AND purple.

Any input would be appreciated!

I love it! The close up looks puffy like it has embroidery on it versus a by the textbook brocade. Any loose threads in the pocket or something to test the outer shell? It could be a silk or silk satin brocade, but the close up is making me feel its a little more unless the close up is an extreme close up and my eyes are playing tricks, and it just creates a more 3D effect than it really is

It's pretty darn puffy in person! The upper portion of the fabric sample image is accurate. Toward the bottom of the image it's a bit darker and thus the 3-D effect is enhanced a bit.

I did do a burn test on a sample and it's not all silk (if any). There is plenty of extra seam allowance around the pockets to do another test. The lining is all silk, but the outer fabric 1/2 melted. It was part ash & part crunchy glob. The metallic threads could have contributed to the melt.

Hmmm....

To me I am seeing still a more matelasse effect, but that probably is just my monitor. Hmmm...well it could be a silk blend then.......?

I think you are right about it being a matelasse effect (or is that just "a matelasse"?)

I believe a brocade should appear to be the reverse weave of the right side of the fabric (on the wrong side). This has a layer of loosely-woven white fibres on the back. I assumme these are there to create the quilted look on the front.

I've seen the back of a regular brocade fabric, and this is different, due to that fact.

So, if I set this on fire again, what am I looking for? I'm OK if something is wool, silk or cotton, and then the opposite of that - pure polly or acrylic, but fibres in-between confuse me when judging burn test results.

These is also an interlining. I'm not sure what kind of fabric. It's a thicker fabric with a basic weeve.

Maybe I'll set THAT on fire, too!:horny:

a damask is the reverse color of the opposite side and is a reversable fabric. It is consistent with brocade if it has threads on the opposite side or has the metallic threads in it. Both damasks, tapestries, and brocades are jacquards. This just seems really too puffy to me. it is more than just embroidered and is not yarny enough for crewelwork either. Matelasses i usually see as tone on tone, but that is the best i could think of.

I know we always want to be exacting here, but maybe the exact blend content is not knowable. Play up the looks and the type of it unless someone comes by and says the right thing.

I would definitely go with matelasse. As for the fiber content, it could be
a blend of some kind. I agree with Chris, call it a metallic matelasse brocade (I do see silver thread in it too, right?) and play up the fabulous colours and style.

This is one CUTE coat!

That's a purr-dee dress!

It does look like the same type of fabric.

I measured this some time ago and I can NOT find the paper I wrote on. That's not like me. But, it's not here.

Anyway, if this fit me better across the back, I would keep it for myself. But, it's a tad snug. Although, I was able to get my over-sized bosoms into it long enough to be the model (ahem).

I still have to re-measure it. Tomorrow, most likely.

I'm not sure whether to just put a HUGE BIN on it (which never seems to work out with my greedy plans) or start it at...??.... whatever and cross my fingers.

I would probably do a bidding price, and then an optimistic BIN. If you only do a buy it now that is really hefty and guessed the market wrong, you have a big fee to pay. I of course don't know what your perception of "hefty" is so can't say for sure.

Darn! No wonder I couldn't find it! hehe I kept checking your auctions and never saw it. Great job on that one! :) and :( lOl
