Hello,

Can anyone tell me the right term for this fabric, and also identify the stylised flowers?

It's silk, and I'm wondering whether this kind of pattern weave is called damask or jacquard, or something else? The fabric is pretty thin.

Also wondering if any horticulturalists can say what these overblown blooms are.

Many thanks

Ruth

I'm thinking silk damask and perhaps Grevillia? Grevillia is a native Australian plant so that seems unlikely though (Wikipedia tells me that it's found in some nearby countries too).

The leaves are wrong though - and they're also wrong for waratah, the other native flora it reminds me of.

Hi,

Looks like silk damask, which is also a type of jacquard weave.

And yes, spider mums! The Japanese used this motif in fabrics quite a bit. My mom used to grow spider mums and arrange them Japanese style. I love them..

Thanks for everyone's input. So damask is a type of jacquard weave? No wonder I was confused. BTW I did burn test so am pretty certain it is silk, but as I've only ever done a few burn tests, it's good to hear it looks like silk.

Good to know too that spider mums are Japanese motif - I did think this pattern had an oriental look to it.

Spider mum sounds like a female superhero to me! Superwoman, Batgirl, Spidermum...
