Fabric enquiry

Hi there everyone.

I have a old Windsmoor womens skirt suit in a fabric I can't identify. The style of the suit seems to be 1950s ?? but I can't tell from the Windsmoor label. The skirt also has a label in it reading 12 Mavis- that could be the size and the style but it could also be the previous owners name I guess! Does anyone have any ideas? I'm attaching photos. Thanks so much. Deb

That is a lovely suit. The fabric is a brocade, you might call it a novelty brocade as it is an unusual pattern. Hard to be sure on the date as it is hanging on a hanger, but it does look like it could be middish 1950s. Is the jacket a boxy shape or does it slightly nip in at the waist? Are the sleeves full length?

Lets see what others think.

Thanks so much Barbara. The photos don't do the suit justice (my bad) . The jacket nips in at the waist with two sets of darts at the front and one dart at the back. The suit has a pencil skirt with a slit at the centre. The jacket sleeves are 3/4 length with cuffs. The neckline/collar seems unusual too-haven't been able to see anything similar on-line. I've had this suit for about 30 years and it came with a british threepenny bit in one of the pockets!. Deb

Windsmoor is a nice quality brand, it's a great suit. The nipped in waist does suggest 50s to me, although I'm not sure about the 3/4 sleeves regarding the precise dating. How lovely about the thrupenny bit - I can't help wondering, does the coin have a date?

If we can get the suit dated, it would be great to add the label to the VFG label resource with your permission. https://vintagefashionguild.org/label-resource/windsmoor/

Tagging @Ranch Queen Vintage re the label in case that works out.

Thanks Ruth. I attach a better photo of the label. I've been doing a bit more research and according to this website https://retrodee.wordpress.com/2018...0s-clothes-pt-2-identifying-vintage-by-style/ its very likely to be 1950s because its size 12 but 25" waist and 'tea length'. Its also got a small collar button with thread loop and a metal side zipper marked up as FLASH, plus hook and eye on the waistband. I've lost the thrupenny bit I'm afraid!

Here's the reverse side of the skirt at the slit showing the edges of the fabric . The seams are otherwise serged.
