I'v had this dress forever, and just love love love it! The colors and the pattern, in adition to the "jewel" buttons just speak to me. Do you think it is from the 30's? How would you describe the pattern? Can you see how in between the flowers there are neat line drawings of houses and bushes and stuff or something? I notice I didn't take a real close-up, but I think you can see.
Unfortunately, the silk has weakened quite a bit, and while I wouldn't go so far as to say it is shattering, it has some splits in some weak spots.:(
More pics available if needed.
Thanks!!!

Oh, I should have said! The buttons are purely decorational, and the dress has a front opening that secures with small metal snaps under the buttons.

Lovely dress - I think it's probably rayon or silk crepe, those fabrics don't shatter, only weighted silks like satins and taffetas shatter. Crepe is a delicate material and it could have been damaged, especially if it hasn't been cared or washed correctly.

The style is very simple for '30s and I wonder if the sleeves have been removed? These colours were very popular in the '40s. I think it probably originates from either of these decades. Actually, I suspect it's had some "updating", perhaps a '30s dress updated in the '40s.
