Farming and High Fashion - What would you wear?

When I'm not out scouring for beautiful vintage frocks, I am a part-time writer for an agricultural newspaper. I get to write all sorts of crazy stories about farming and it has become a passion of mine in addition to fashion!

So, when I found out I had the opportunity to go to the farm owned by George Malkemus and Anthony Yurgaitis (Manolo Blahnik!) I just about died. They own a farm in CT with show cows who are pampered everyday and are known for consistently winning many awards and titles in the show cow world.

Now I'm hoping to head off to the farm sometime soon, but I was thinking... I need to look good for this interview! So, if you were in my shoes, what would you wear? It needs to be practical for walking around a dairy farm, but also fashionable!

Any ideas? :)

Thanks!

You can never go wrong with well tailored denim pants and jackets.
A farm supply store with a clothing section has wonderful practical shoes and boots.

Hi,

What a great opportunity! I agree with the idea of wearing vintage or even antique Western wear....the antique cowgirl look is fabulous if you can pull it off. I like a mid calf length split skirt in khaki or denim, sturdy boots..preferably vintage or classic new ones. Simple blouse.....and a wide leather belt with a big funky buckle or antique sash buckle. Remember the move "Giant", and the way Lux dressed? Kind of like that.

And of course....a hat...maybe a soft slouchy fedora.....with a bolo style string so you can wear it slung down your back like an accessory when it is not on the head.

But that's me....

It sounds like a fun day....can you submit the story to Mary Jan's Farm? Sounds like it is right up their alley.

Me? Upstate NY? Cool weather?

good leather walking shoes or boots.
flattering jeans
a great wool plaid 49er jacket over a long sleeve T
OR a lightweight vintage cardi over a silk T

at least one piece of great vintage jewelery

But that's a uniform for me, anyway

If you will be getting up close and personal with the cattle, or walking in the barns and/or fields, I would wear tall rubber muck-style boots with a defined low heel--the slimmer ones you can wear for riding as well as mucking out (I can't remember what they are called right this minute, but I have a pair--they are not as clunky as a muck boot). With the wet spring we have had in the northeast, I don't think I'd wear leather boots; it's apt to be rather messy around a farm right about now. Unless you end up going when things have dried out a bit. But a barn area isn't going to be as dry as normal ground, in most cases.

And I love the idea of a split denim or khaki skirt, with a button-front shirt, wide leather belt, and denim jacket. All vintage if possible!

Duster jacket...cool leather boots..... Cool hat...... Not too farm girl.... Hamptons chic....

I am interested in the cows.... Would love to photograph them....

Have fun......

"khaki skirt, with a button-front shirt, wide leather belt" Also a good choice.
I lived in this look ( with boots of course) in the "Out of Africa" phase of my life

I'd wear what I usually wear to muck out my horses in the summer: jeans, a cute pink top (maybe a vintage 50's gingham blouse or similar?) and a pair of pink Joules or Hunter wellies. It says "cute, farmy and fashionable" without being " clueless towny out for a day at the farm". :D

I've been reading this thread and thinking about what I'd wear so decided to do a little searching about the Farm. It's in Litchfield, CT (known as an affluent summer resort) so is not "Western" - and looking at the photos of the farm and tours, I'm not sure you will need mucking out boots. I think - depending on when you go - that a vintage mid-length khaki skirt with a gingham or plaid blouse would work OR a '50's skirtwaist dress in a floral, plaid or gingham. I might wear flats!
