Fetal lamb fur?

I was told this coat is from the 1950s and it was made from unborn baby lamb and winter sliver mink.
Lamb fur is a little curly and very soft.

I just want to confirm if it is fetal lamb fur. Sounds so cruel!

Hi Jenny! Do not worry, the gray lamb fur is not fetal lamb (which is referred to as broadtail). Your lamb is beautifully curled, so nice and thick and lovely. Really a fine looking Persian lamb fur and one of the nicest I have seen.

The trim looks a lot like mink to me. We have a VFG member who knows a great deal about furs and she will likely come along to help you further with that fur.

Barbara is spot on. The lamb is beautiful Persian lamb and the collar is mink fur. It looks like Sapphire mink which is beautiful shade of grey.

Broadtail lamb is stillborn and unborn lamb from sheep. Although it is sad that they are stillborn the sheep aren’t killed for their lambs which is one reason why broadtail is expensive. Yours is not broadtail lamb.

The difference between lamb and sheep is the age. Sheep can always be lamb just like an adult can always be a mom's baby. Broadtail lamb has a moiré wavy like appearance that is close to the skin. As the lamb ages the that close wave turns into a defined tight curl. Finally when the lamb grows older and becomes sheep the curl gets larger and is sometimes called curly lamb or sheep.

Yours again is beautiful and is Persian lamb which is older. :)

Thank you so much for finding out identify the furs! How old is this Persian lamb coat?

You are most welcome. Your photos showed up sideways so I am having a bit of difficulty seeing the shape for that reason, also because the coat is open, and because I cannot see the sleeve style. If you can figure out how to post photos showing the coat in the correct position, with it closed, the front and the back I should be able to help you more with dating.

Can I also put in a request for a photo of that fabulous lining, which almost seems to imitate the persian lamb in print...

Sorry, I took the photos from my phone first.
Here are some photos from a better camera.
It doesn't have buttons or hooks to close it.

Thank you. It does indeed looks like it dates to the 50s. If you have anymore questions please ask and we will be happy to assist.
