Few Questions on Selling Clothing with No Labels

Hi,

I am new to this forum. Is it ok to post questions if I sell vintage clothing on Etsy? I want to make sure I am not violating any kind of rules.

I am just starting out and did not realize how much there is I need to learn on buying and selling vintage clothes!

If it is ok to post questions here, is there a way to tell if something is vintage, and how to date it, if there are no labels? Perhaps the item is handmade? I was told by another seller that she would not even consider buying or listing an item with no labels.

Thank you so much,

Debbie

It is OK to post a photo and ask questions about an item as long as it is not currently for sale.
Yes, you can usually tell if an item is vintage by a combination of style, materials, and construction details.

This page we put together a while ago is also a good place to start for some easy to remember info:

As to labels - the vast majority of 1940s and earlier garments have no labels at all. In the 19th century, a dressmaker label or store label is a rarity as much clothing was home or local dressmaker made. Though more clothing was commercially produced in the 20s and 30s, labels were not as important to the consumer, and they are not common. Not until after WW II did the manufacturers and public in the US become more label conscious. Many garments carry only a factory label or Union label in the 50s, 60s and even 70s.
So to require a label in a vintage garment in order to consider it sellable is very restrictive and often unrealistic.

But since that will leave more early garments for me to find out there in the world, so I guess that's OK!
