Finding a Buyer

I am a brand new registrant and though I have read the rules for the forum, I'm hoping I'm "legal" here. I've read some of the posts about people wanting to find sources for vintage clothes. I'm looking for suggestions on where to find a buyer(s) for an estate. I think I've got some special clothes (1930's - 80's) with some cool Ferragamo shoes - but I haven't a clue what to do with them. My husband and I are photographing and inventorying with the intention of sending a CD Rom to vintage stores that I find in random places. There are too many to lug around. We're in the Rochester, NY area and we think we'll try to find people in NYC vintage stores willing to look at the CD Rom - but heck we'll send it anywhere. I know this is unusual as the estate belonged to a woman who loved beautiful things. And kept them. And labelled them - as in "Worn to University of Rochester 1935 December formal". I'm all for Goodwill and donate MY clothes there - but I wear cheap stuff! So, I hope I haven't broken any rules, but I sure could use some suggestions for how to sell this "collection" of clothes. Thank you!

Welcome to the forums: your situation is common, all vintage traders get regular approaches from people like you.

A CD ROM is good but a buyer will need to see and touch the clothing before deciding to buy: my advice is to approach the vintage traders in your area, perhaps advertise in local papers. We have some traders here who aren't too far away from you, perhaps some will respond.

Good luck! I hope the collection finds a good home. Having provenance is a big bonus: we all love the stories. You could also speak to local museums as they may be interested in particular items, especially if the relate to local events.
