First-Foot into 2025: Vintage Footwear

A “first-foot” is the first person to enter a household on New Year’s Day, bringing good fortune and well-being for the coming year. He (usually a dark-haired man) carries a selection of symbolic gifts representing prosperity, food and warm housing, zest and good cheer. The household entertains him in return, and according to some accounts, he can claim a kiss from every woman in the house. And though the tradition originated in the north of England, Scotland and the Isle of Man, other countries—Vietnam, Greece and Georgia—also have similar New Year practices.
