While sitting in a doctor’s waiting room I came across a brief article in the New Yorker about Arnold Scaasi, the 67 year old designer.. He has made clothes for five US first ladies, In this brief article were such tidbits as the fact that Mamie Eisenhower didn’t wear a bra for his ballgown. It had something to do with foundation garments leaving creases around her arms..??
Jackie Kennedy bought his ready to wear Scaasi from Bergdorf’s but he never got to fit her in the White House. She called Scaasi asking to see some of his recent work and was told she would be charged wholesale, not retail. He was told she didn’t pay for her clothes and Oleg Cassini got the job.
He designed this dress for Barbara Bush -
But he will probably be most remembered for Barbara Streisand’s pantsuit outfit at the Academy Awards. (Yes they were lined.)
