OK - Not exactly classy vintage ... but am I the only person who used to look at these catalogues in wonder? The artists’ models are more like comic characters and I wasn’t sure who the audience was for these clothes. (Well actually, I did have an idea...) Here’s a description of one of the dresses on this page.

“Man Alive ... They’ll come alive when you make your entrance in this curve-cuddler! Designed with its very own bra to cuddle, caress and shape you, while the dress fits like your own skin. Ragian sheer rayon and acetate chiffon sleeves and back. Zip in sensuous Black or Lemon sherbert. Sizes 8 to 16. $25.99”

Did any of these dresses actually survive until 2009? I would like to see what they look like in “real life.”

In that last image, check out the dress in the center middle. Hows that for odd arm straps?

I've had a couple Fredericks dresses from the 60s that were superb, well made and very sexy!! I can't remember what they looked like right now...will have to dig for pics.

I've wondered if this set isn't a Frederick's piece. Has side metal zip, top & slim fit skirt, made of a puckered nylon blend.....definitely 60s but that open back isn't your every day 60s look!

My Estevez has a neckline not unlike that center one on the bottom right, with double straps pulling over to one side!

I love these catalogs...its always been my mental image of what women in the 60s looked like. I think Mad Men channels that bad-yet-sophisticated-girl look. But many of those dresses would look very tame worn less snug and without the giant pointy ta-ta's!

Oh, I also have a dressing gown by Fredericks from the late 40s! Its black slipper satin, fitted waist and full length....nowhere near as racy as this stuff, but lovely and very well made.

I used to be totally bemused by the 'falsies' for every part of the body...they sold not only the pointiest of bullet bras but also pads for the butt and thighs. Could their target market have been drag queens?
