front page of website - what categories do you prefer?

well, here i am trapped in the front room of my house with a laptop, unable to do any real work as i am having the new windows fitted in every room except the attic and all my vintage has been painstakingly packed away...the house is in uproar and has been since the weekend.
aaanyway, time for me to concentrate on website things which have been going on for a year now and are finally nearing completion (the trouble with someone doing web design as a 'favour' - you can't hassle them to hurry up!).

i'm just confirming my categories for the front page, and am trying to decide between

A) decades first (1930s and before, 40's, 50's, 1960s and 70's)
-which will then be subcategorised on the next page

OR

B) categories first (i.e. daywear, formalwear,accessories)
- and then subcategorised into decades.

when you first arrive at a website which would you prefer to see - or do you use yourself? Am erring on the side of decades but I have seen both ways work. i won't have an enormous volume of stock, probably end up carrying c. 200 items when fully stocked, majority being womens wear (hence me not bothering with a seperate mens/womens category)

all opinions very welcome!

I think it depends on what you want your website to be. Are people more likely to be collectors of a particular era or they just want something fantastic to wear and they mix their eras and aren't as particular about date?

Also do you want all your categories on the front page or do you prefer to have them more inside the site?

i think i want to have a page where people can jump in and shop straightaway, as well as being the front page. i think i've spent such a long time thinking about it and changing my mind that i can't be given any more choices incase i redesign the whole thing again... ;)
i just want to keep it all really simple, then i can concentrate on my usual far too detailed descriptions and condition reports for each item, lol!

Is it possible to list the main categories, be they decades or types of clothing, then have a drop-down menu appear, still on the front page, so that visitors to your site aren't taken to a second page to choose the subcategory? Then from the drop down they would be taken directly into the specific item group.

When I shop online, I look first for the type of clothing I'm looking for, i.e., cocktail dress, coat, suit, etc., then I would choose the era. But to me, the era isn't the determining factor. If your target market is more likely to be era collectors, then you would want to do it the other way 'round.

thanks guys! am going to speak to web designer and see what he can do. obviously i want to appeal to both wearers and collectors, so need to make the front page as accesible as possible.
