I need a full petticoat to help display circle skirts and New Look dresses to get that bell shape, but either the petticoats I've seen are just a couple of layers of tulle cheaply made or too long or not full enough, just floppy. Max length is prob 27 inches or so. Its for my tailor's dummy so 26 inch waist plus.

I did see the perfect one, but I'm from the UK and this was on Ebay from US and ended about 2.30am. It was vintage but new is ok if it's well made and very full and a good price lol! This is the pic of the one I really liked to give u an idea of what I'm after (only went for $21.49, the shipping wld have been $15.50):

I recommend Malco Modes petticoats - they have two layers and come in the right lengths for '50s dresses, as well as a range of colours. You can see one here that they have for auction on ebay for $36US: petticoat.

I purchased a vintage 'style' double-layer tulle petticoat recently from Petticoats a Plenty (they're in Liverpool). I know the owner, Andrea, and she is wonderful. Take a look at her website or she'll make to whatever size you require. Mine arrived beautifully wrapped in a box - she really does pay attention to detail. Tell her I sent you! It's worth buying one to display your 50's frocks - so glad I bought one. Hope that helps.

Thanks Nicole and Louise! I'll follow both those leads up. Louise that's just the petticoat I'm after, it's lovely and full & if I if I do go ahead & buy one, I will mention you of course

Wonderful! I always think it nice to personally recommend something like this. My petticoat is so light and fluffy - a bit like candy floss but without the sticky bit!!!

Nicole..the Malco Modes ones are lovely too (the 4 layer ones r huge!)! It's a shame that most Ebay listings from US ends past my bed time! :fainting:

Louise, I love your euphemism, very cute lol! I've been looking more at Petticoats-a-plenty's website. They are a bit more than I wanted 2 pay, but looks like u get really good quality & i don't mind paying for that, it's when your'e paying the money and not getting the quality that's annoys me. I also like their set up ie not from a mass produced factory. Is that an ivory petticoat u bought & what size did you go for? Basically, I want 2 order exactly what uv got! I'd hv to order online as miles & miles away from me.

Hi Sarah,

So glad you love my petticoat. I had Andrea make it from the measurements I gave her for a 50's Peggy Page dress which had a 26 inch waist. I just told her the waist measurement of the dress and the length of the skirt and I think I also sent her a photo of the frock by email. I'd never owned a petticoat but Andrea put my mind at ease - she really knows her stuff and suggested a double-layer petticoat.

The reason her petticoats are possibly a little more expensive is because of the materials she uses. She only buys in the very softest tulle. I actually met her on Facebook and because she's in Liverpool and I'm in Manchester I went over there with a couple of friends and we had a lovely day out. We visited her friends new vintage shop in Crosby and Andrea now has a little workshop in the back room there. It's all worked out so well. If I'm not mistaken, she's just working out an order with Vivienne of Holloway (you'll find her doing a Google search if you've not already heard about her).

Here's the link to Andrea's Facebook page if you want to become a fan. Perhaps contact her there or directly from her website using the contact form. Just make an enquiry if you're unsure what you want. Trust me, she's a lovely girl and will be very helpful.

Andrea got into the business of making petticoats when she as looking for one for her daughter. She couldn't find any really nice ones on eBay and as her background is in curtain making and soft furnishings, decided to have a go herself. She's never looked back. Like I say, they are made from the finest quality materials. Even the box smells lovely when you open it. I made my order and it arrived within the week! Obviously it will depend on how busy she is at the moment but do tell her I recommended her.

Gawd! I should be on commission shouldn't I? :D

Louise you've certainly sold Andrea's petticoats to me! I've been looking for ages so thankyou & yes u should be on commission! Andrea's actually on holiday til the 15 August, so I'm gonna have to be a patient bunny, but I'm sure the wait will be worth it :spin:

Have a fab day!
