Fur question

Hi Everyone... tis moi again.

Fur question. I have quite a collection of furs and a furrier who I think kinda knows what she is talking about... but I haven't gotten to take this one to her yet and would like an idea of if you think it is actually from the 40s as I do. I'm thinking fox, maybe red fox... but, not sure. I am pretty good at identifying fur and of course have researched it like mad... but would appreciate the help. The lining is real silk, there are no labels or tags. It has pretty exaggerated shoulder pads that make the sleeves appear quite wide. 3 hook and eye clasps, definitely some rough spots. I can post a close up of the fur in a bit if needed.

Oh yeah, exterior inner sleeve is lined with satiny silk that matches the lining.

Thanks,

*~Eli

Are you sure the lining isn't rayon satin? They usually are from that period. Not sure on what the fur is but it doesn't look very luxe for fox but I don't have an alternate suggestion for you...

It could be Rayon satin but it really looks like real silk... Ill do a burn test and confirm if I am able... yeah.. the fur has me thrown. I may have to schlep to the furrier I guess. It does look 40s though yes?

Thank you Jonathan

I generally determine '40s fur silhouettes by seeing them fully done up, so that you can see the line, but even open you can see how built up those shoulders are. So I'll say "yes", it's probably '40s but if you can show a photo of the jacket closed I'll feel more sure of it.

It looks like it could well be red fox but unfortunately it appears the fur has seen its better days.
It happens with time and how the fur was being cared for over the years.

The lining looks more like a rayon satin to me.

I have had 40s jackets as well with a piece of fabric like you have here on the sleeves. These were called chubby jackets.

I added a picture of it closed and yes it is Rayon satin... I burn tested it. The fur is rough, but the pelts are still soft and pliable. I may have it revitalized and try to sell it at a discount.

Thanks everyone... greatly helpful as is usual *smile*

I'd say it's red fox. Red fox from southern areas don't have the density of fur that the more arctic types do. Unless of course they are bred for it such as Golden Island fox etc. The older ones therefore lack that fluffy lustre in my experience therefore I would say it is forties.

Thank you and I will def do that Mary Jane. Im going to check into it this weekend and if it isnt to spendy, Ill give it a shot. Its such a lovely piece and I got it for so little, it may be worth the revitalization cost even if I resell it... but only if it works *smile*
