Fur stole- mink?

hello, I think this stole is mink, but I want to make sure. Also is there a particular name for this open shoulder type stole?
Thanks (click on the pictures to enlarge them)

I am not sure about the shoulder thing - I know I've seen it a few times (never on a stole though!) and just referred to it as peek a boo or cut out.. wonder if anyone else has a clue to the technical term?

Sorry to bother everyone with this question :BAGUSE:. I had read the fur resource, but as it shows even fur from the same animal can look so different, and when i list it i wanted to be a 100% sure of what it was. I have no idea if that shoulder effect has a proper name, but it would be interesting to know. Peek a boo is quite a good term though. Thanks :)

Hi there!
Your fur is really stunning and the style is really unique. I am not an expert in furs although I have sold quite a few over the years. It is definitely a mink fur. As far as the style of it goes, I like the term peek-a-boo stole as it will attract the pin-up bombshell gals. The important thing on this is to get the right key words in your title. You really need: shrug, cape, capelet, wrap & stole in there somewhere. I know it seems redundant but it will get you more hits as people looks these up so many different ways. I try to wait until mid-september to start listing furs as they seem to get higher bids then.
Good luck with your auction!

Is there a furrier or someone very knowledgable you can check with to see if this is really mink just to be on the safe side?

Some years ago when I sold my cousin's mink stole to an collectible clothes dealer, I first had it assessed by someone who had been in the fur business. Turned out mink was not mink but a member of that extensive family and dyed to resemble mink.

During the 50s-60s fake mink was popular for those who couldn't afford the real thing. And many so-called fur stores took advantage of that fad.

Sorry I can't think of the name. The other common fake passed off as mink is kolinsky or Russian squirrel which was commonly found in fur scarves.

This looks like a fur that has been dyed to look like mink to me, possibly marmot. It's hard to tell, but I don't see the glossy guard hairs I would expect with mink in your close-up photo.

Thanks everyone. I don't mind too much about what fur it does turn out to be. I got this stole for £1 at a car boot sale, and the thing i love most about it was the discovery that it was sold in a furrier just down the road from me that I never knew existed. I was asking my gran about it, and she remembered the woman who ran it, so that was quite nice. Thanks Carrie, for the keyword help, I’ll definitely use some of those words.

Unfortunately, I don't know any fur experts, so there isn’t really anyone I can ask. I suppose one of the reasons that I did ask for fur ID help on this one is that I sold a derry and toms one earlier in the year, and it was silkier (I asked about that one too, and you guys told me it was mink). This stole is smooth and silky but maybe not as good quality? I put that down to all animals having slightly different fur, but its entirely possible that this has been dyed to resemble mink. I just wish I could be sure.
