Future of the Vintage Industry

With the current "fast" fashion trend and many things being mass produced, in your opinion, where do you see the future of the vintage industry going? Do you believe future generations will be able to enjoy vintage items the way we can now?

(I am writing a thesis paper for school on this topic and would love to hear outside thoughts...thank you so much, amy)

Hi Amy
The Victorians were fascinated in the past and maybe they asked the same question then as you are doing today.
It's human nature to collect and store something another example are pots of Saxon gold and silver which occasionally turn in in the most unlikely places in the UK and Europe been berried for safe keeping. it's about passing something onto the next generation if you can.
so I feel that vintage fashion in some form will still be around in 25 or 50 years time the size of the market will be determined by how much free time people have and there disposable income at the time.

Amy, I think we are seeing the beginning of a trend away from 'fast' fashion for at least some pockets of the population. I don't think vintage clothing will ever be generally worn as there just isn't enough supply after 25 or more years! And the fashion industry is huge and will always have new product to promote and sell. That said, I think vintage fashion will still be around for quite a while - it's different, it's often incredibly well made, and as designers continue to plow through it for inspiration, a new crop of consumers finds it every year.

Now how it will be sold and marketed? That's hard to predict. When I started buying in the 80, it was all thrifts, a handful of estate sales, and a handful of brick and mortar shops. There were a few vintage clothing shows, but most were on the East and West coasts in the US. Then the specialty Vintage clothing shows got more popular, eBay started, online shops happened, then Etsy and Ruby Lane, and all the other online platforms.
I can't imagine what will come next.

So true and I agree. I have hope seeing the public is starting to demand healthier foods they are also demanding more for their money all around.
Quality, quality and quality is the main reason. A vintage coat will run circles around most new ones.
It is hard for me to let anything go for that reason really.
I keep trying to nudge some family members that are younger believe me.
Hope your paper will be a success and bring more interested in the field.
Sandy

Along these lines I am seeing quite a bit about vintage Weddings and of course vintage Fashion more and more.
On social sites and such.
So many beautiful vintage gloves and unique special gifts for the Wedding party can be found if one looks.
Along of course beautiful Wedding gowns and such.
The more decorating is also leaning to whatever makes one happy hopefully vintage will be respected.
It may just be my rose colored glasses but I am also seeing a bit movement away from repurposing and back to
traditional vintage and antiques interest as well.
The more people discover and learn about quality and names of past artists, designers etc. hopefully it will.
IMHO only. Sandy
