Something I had forgotten about private label garments--garments with just a store label. I pulled out a Saks Chanel copy last week and it had only the Saks label. Some Saks labels have a manufacturer or designer as well. This explains why garments have just the store name.
There were manufacturers who manufactured garments for stores like Saks and Lord& Taylor. I used to take my students to visit one in LA. They put the store's label in, but not their own. The last time I went was in the 80s.
Generally, the garments were quality knock-offs of designs which the buyers had seen at the fashion shows or maybe just photos.
