General Dating Question - States' Name Abbreviations

Amanda, I think the changeover started in the early 70s or very late 60s--not too many years after the advent of the zip code. I'm sure I can remember late in my high-school years or in college having the teachers drill into us that in running copy you were to still use the old abbreviations, and that the new ones were only for mailing addresses (actually, other than AP newspaper, style, that is still correct, but most people dont' bother anymore....).

My memory may be failing on this, though, but I don't think so.
