Genuine crocodile or croc-embossed?

Found this beautiful vintage card case from Marshall Field's, but I can't figure out if it's genuine crocodile. I can't find an umbilical scar, but I don't think that choice section was usually used in wallets. It is lined in leather, but it doesn't indicate any materials - just that it's made in West Germany for the upscale department store Marshall Field's. Any input and tips are appreciated, as I love learning about exotic skins!

Looks like alligator rather than crocodile to me - I don't see the hair mark. And its at least pre 1989 if its from 'West' Germany. The colour makes me think late 70s.
