getting rid of that nasty detoriated lining powder stuff!

Hi all,

I recently acquired some NOS dresses from the late 60s - early 70s. Wonderful off the rack dresses - bold colors, mod styling. Love them! Only problem is, they are all wool blend material lined with that horrible foam lining that breaks down over time and turns into dust (just like the lining of certain old boots).

Anyone have a way of getting rid of this stuff without washing the dresses or removing the lining? I tried tossing one in the dryer on air fluff and it worked ok, but I don't want to ruin my dryer with that powder stuff. I thought about cutting out the lining completely, but they are NOS and I would like to keep them intact as much as possible.

Any suggestions for getting rid of this nasty stuff (also in boots) would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Oh dear - I remember this topic being discussed years ago on the VC&A
board, and not sure if there is a remedy. The foam can really mess up
your dryer and/or your vacuum, so I would not use either of these.

Hopefully someone with a better memory than mine can add to this.

I've tossed these in the dryer with a Dryel sheet, or other brand, and have had good luck. The sheet "catches" much of the residue, and freshens up the whole piece. But if these have hangtags on them, the dampness of the stuff on the sheets might damage the tags. I haven't had a problem with my dryer, either, as long as I clean the lint filter out right away. Sometimes I use the bag, but I hate to get the stuff all over my Dryel bag, so usually I just throw them in without. HTH!

I have always just dry cleaned such items. I call them bio-hazards! Why, oh WHY did anyone have to invent such a lining?

I've actually had good luck with the vaccuum. It can leave a residue in the tubes but if you vaccuum up some sand it seems to clean that out.... this was an accidental discovery thanks to my kids making a mess while playing in sand!!! :hysterical:

I'd love to hear any other ideas!! (....sometimes takes quite a few turns with the vaccuum!)
