Hi,
I need help dating and describing this Givenchy coat. There is ink writing on the fabric label but it is to faded to read. The pictures are horrible because I don't have a good camera with me. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Beth

Well, I am unsure. I think it is 60s. They style seems 60s but the use of the labels is not common in that time frame, however that canvasy type label I find all the way up until the early 70s, so I don't think it is newer than that. The givenchy label itself looks like one we have in our label resource but it is white. So we don't have this one in particualr yet but a very similar one from a 1960s piece. I hope that helps and the bump gets some confirmation.

Hi Jennifer,
I did see the white label in the resource guide but it didn't have the linen or canvas ink written label. Were they common in all vintage Givenchy items? Also, would you describe the coat as a swing style coat? I'm new to this so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for replying to my question!!

I would not describe the coat as a "swing coat" - that implies a much fuller look. The coat cannot be earlier than 1969 which is when the Nouvelle Boutique line was launched - originally at Bergdorf Goodman. It is probably early 1970's. If you do a Google Search there are a lot of links about this line - in addition to a little bit about it in the LR. When you search on Google, click on News and then Archives. Some of the articles are pay-for-view but you can get an idea of content from the titles.

Oh wow awesome to know Linn about the Nouvelle Boutique line. So early 70s on this one? And if anyone else reads this you know the canvas "type" labels I am referring to, the papery ones? Have yall seen any on items into the 80s? I haven't so inquiring minds want to know :-)

If you put a sheet of white paper behind the label or hold it up with the light shining through you may be able to read the text in some places.

You can also look at it on your screen from low down or high up which immediately changes the contrast you view - I often do this with very dark or light pictures.

Thanks everyone for your help!! This is such a great forum and you are all so generous in sharing your time and knowledge.
