hi guys. I'm new to this board, and i'm just trying it out. Trying to take a break from the craziness over on the VCA. :)

Anyways, I have 3 questions. They are all in regards to a 1950's Bernhard Altmann Cashmere sweater with 2 removable collars, one fur.
I'm having trouble identifying the fur. I tried to do a little research first, but I'm not having much luck, as I've never handled any fur before. Fox maybe? I don't know. i'm way out of my league on this. Any thoughts based on the pic? The fur is kind of stiff on top and it's a little fuzzy and soft underneath I guess. hard to explain. It's kind of slick. (side question - how does one tell if fur is starting to dry out?)

Ok, the second question is in regards to the cashmere. There is a fair amount of pilling and one spot that i'd like to try to remove. I'd love to hear what people find is the best choice for cleaning cashmere, and also if anyone has any great ideas for cleaning up the pilling.

3rd question makes me feel silly, but I'm so scared about this that i'm just going to ask. Please be honest. My regular model is gone for 2 weeks, and I my sub isn't coming in until wed., so I decided to model it myself. Has anyone else done this? It has been the worst decision ever because I ended up hating all of the pics and feeling miserable! lol. I suppose that's normal. Anyways, I've never modeled my own stuff before (well, never modeled at all for that matter), and this shot is the only one I liked. One of my friends thinks it looks too sad, and she's right - it does look a little forlorn i suppose. I was hoping it was in a "where oh where has my prince charming gone" kind of way, but I'm a little delusional right now from staring at a computer all day? What do you guys think? Is it distracting or will it help? I tried to "vintage" it up a bit because I thought maybe that looked cooler. I don't know. It would just be used as a supplimentary pic with better close-ups etc. also.

Ok. that's alot I know. and I realize it's especially asking a lot since I've never been here before. I'm hoping this will be a fun, positive forum where I can participate and help out when I can. I promise to return the favor.

Cheers,
Mel

hi there,
welcome, dont you worry about asking questions, ask away its what we all thrive on here!!

Love the pic with the model, very professional, so many of pics with models look NAF!!! but yours is really great!.. yur hands may be best behind you to show the collar more, but l would use it if l looke dHALf that good!!

a bit difficult to see the fur, but looks quailty, well would be with cashmere, think it may be mink actually, have you checked out our fur resource, linked from the home page, under 'resources'??? try it its great..its not fox, and probably not rabbit, looks to luxurious, but could be..my guess is blonde mink.

regarding the pilling, can you not get pilling combs and brushes there? we have several here, you just gently comb the bobbles away...and there is a battery operated one too (dont laugh!), but l prefer to do it by hand..

hope this helps....

It's mink. And I think you look beautiful in your self modeling shot. I love your hair pulled back in that classic style. You've captured the essence of this sweater beautifully.

Sweater shavers are a godsend.

If the collar is removable, you a handwash the sweater. I handwashed sevral following Lizzie's instructions in the Cashmere Sweaters article ( link on the home page under Fashion Features) and they did quite well. Can't promise a spot will come put of course, but they looked a lot fresher.

Mink!

And I love the photo :) The link Marie posted above is great for color reference, I use it a lot; and I agree with Hollis - sweater shavers are a godsend - I don't think I could sell vintage sweaters without one!

thanks so much for the links and the info of fur. I will have to look into getting one of these sweater shavers! lol. I can't believe I didn't know about them. I guess I don't sell sweaters very often, and my own sweaters I only wear very rarely.

a few more quick question. Where does mink fall in the fur desirability rankings. To rephrase, is it considered a really nice fur or just average. Mine seems to be in very good condition. from the pictures I posted, it looks like it has fur loss, but that's just in the pics for some reason. I checked it over, and it's intact. It does feel a little dry to me, but then again, I've never handled fur, so how would I really know. Maybe mink feels that way.

On a sweater like this, a Bernhard Altmann with 2 collars, this fur one, and an elaborately beaded on, would it be worth it to take it to a furrier to get treated or something? THere is quite a bit of pilling, but otherwise all good. I just don't want to invest and then not be able to get my money back. Is there maybe an at home product I can use to take care of the fur?

Ok, whew. THANK yOU so much!!! This board rocks!
