Gold Dress

Hello, it's me again!

Sorry to ask another question but wanted to ask this before the weekend.

I acquired a full length gold brocade dress. It's homemade or by a dressmaker and it has a matching handbag and inside is a little money pouch. There isn't any petticoat and I have used a petticoat underneath but not a very pouffy one and not a long one, so it can be alot more voluminous. The skirt is panelled at the side.

My question is re the date...it was sold as 60s, but kind of seems like late 50s maybe? Looks like satin brocade, but unsure, it's very thick material (looks like curtains my brother said - thanks bro!). Also, the old sewing patterns, did they also have dress with matching bag patterns?

Yes the bag isn't mean to be hung on the belt, but thought I would do so for the photo!

Thankyou!

Sarah

Oh I forgot...yes it is really creased cos it was al boxed up..so need to sort that out, tho shame I haven't got a steamer...ho hum

Definitely Sixties I'd say. I always think of this as the dominant evening dress style before the ubiquitous empire line gowns came in around '65, although this could be later depending on how fashion forward (or not) the customer was. I love those heavy curtain-style fabrics.

Okie dokie, definite 60s it is! I was confused cos I thought the top was 60s re the neck, sleeveless etc, but what threw me was the relative fullness of the skirt, compared with the straightness of the empire line 60s dresses, and the subtlety of colour. I kind of associate louder bright colours with the 60s and the pastel, golds with the 50s, so it did confuse me so that's why I wondered if it might have been late 50s, but now I know its 60s, probably early. Thankyou all for clarifying that!

Oh, just wondered...would the dress have been worn over a petticoat or without?

no petticoat.... and its not really that full for a 60s... stules linger and merge... the dead give away is that rhinestone collar :-) very popular by mid 60s... from personal experience... Usually on empire waistes dresses true.. but this was custom made, and probably made to be the most figure flattering for the customer so dont let the waist throw you off... big clues, collar, maxi dress and the general shape
