Golden, prairie, wedding like dress

Hi all... so I have this dress. It has a metal zipper up the back, and the zipper zips down into the interior of the skirt at the waist, very much like I have seen on wedding dresses and the material in the inside is very dense and stiff... again like some wedding dresses. It has a Union tag and a size 14 tag with nothing other tags and I cannot see a place where one was removed. So... I am thinking it is a wedding dress, perhaps from the 70s... but I really am unsure. The zipper is giving me trouble too... does anyone have advice on a "sticky" zipper. The teeth look fine, just is tending to stick making it very hard to close and Im thinking WD 40 would be a bad choice on a satin dress *smile*.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

For the stiff zip, try taking a pencil and running it all over the zip teeth, avoiding the fabric. The graphite should 'lubricate' the zip. A soft pencil, (like 4B or higher) is best, but any pencil will help.

Nice dress. I agree with 70s, not sure if it's a specifically a wedding dress though it would certainly work as one - it could simply be an evening dress. Full length, long sleeved, high neck evening dresses were certainly worn in the 70s.

Hi Eli, I can't tell from your picture if the burnt orange colour is the true colour or because of the lighting level but if it is I wouldn't say it was a wedding dress, bridesmaid's possibly. My immediate thought was a nice hostess gown.

Thank you Ruth. It is a dark golden color... satiny... very thick fabric that is almost golden rod and your assessments makes sense. Maybe I need to take some pictures of the material and lining. I mean yes it could be an evening gown, but the material is almost as tick as canvas and the way the sipper sips into the lining. Well Ill take photos and Ill try the pencil trick. Thanks so much. I love the dress and it is in mint condition, almost like new *smile*

I have several nice evening gowns that zip into the lining, it's just a better way of finishing, so you don't get caught between the layers!

Thanks for the help ladies... man look at those typos. Been typing all day, perhaps I need a break :P

Looks very much like a bridesmaid's dress, which would have come from a wedding outfitters perhaps? The colour (if it is true to photo) is magnificent. For the zipper, as Leonardo da Vintage said, a soft pencil may help, also I have (very, very carefully) used a cotton bud (Q tip) and a little tiny drop of clear oil before. But it's tricky and I honed the skill on wash-n-wear not lovely gowns! So I'd go with the pencil!

Candle wax, beeswax, lipbalm, or soap, are also recommended for sticky zippers. But graphite is so easy to apply with a pencil. Apparently it's best to do it with the zip closed, then open and close the zip a few times to distribute the graphite.

The color of the dress in the photo is true. It is really rather an amazing piece. Ok then.. 70s it is. Here is another one that I believe to be from the 70s in an amazing color as well... I don't know what it is with me and these Victorian / Prairie dresses lately. This one is pristine and luckily the zipper works. It doesn't have that stiff weirdness associated with wedding dresses or bridesmaid dresses. But its one of those crazy colors usually only found at weddings :P

Love it! As you can tell by my avatar, 70s/maxi dresses are a bit of an obsession of mine. People mocked them as frumpy for many years but when you look at the colours, designs and sheer opulance of many of the better examples they are superb!
