Better Dresses Vintage
Alumni
Acquired from local theater. Photos show overall front and back, plus:
1. the seaming that wraps around and shapes the hips.
2. (yellow clips recreate) gathers I removed (forgot to get photo before I snipped). Noticed that the needlework was not up to quality of dress and thread was new. Gathers definitely not original and hid much of back beading. Can't determine whether theater folks added gathers for their own purposes, or if they reworked existing gathers.
3. the tag (use it as you'd like, administrators)
Nothing about Gothe New York on VFG, although several sites note them as a high-end design house of some renown in and around the 50s (can't find source of that claim -- nothing at usual places). All comps fairly splendiferous. Only one is similar in shape and seaming, but much more grand and has ginormous shoulder pads (see it at antiquedress dot com). From the 40s. All other comps are typical 50s styles (thick satins, full skirts, etc.).
Zip is at back, not side. Rayon crepe says 40s, but there are no shoulder pads and I see no evidence that there ever were. BUT... there could have been, and they could have been HUGE. If that were the case, it would very closely resemble the antiquedress comp, albeit a more subdued style.
So... I'm now thinking 40s. Am I right? The hem is a wreck (looks chewed in spots, but only at the very bottom). Will leave it and buyer can hem to desired length. I will fix some of the loose seams (that much I can handle). I've secured many rows of beads threatening to fall off. What about the gathers? Leave as is, or put them back? Do you think it started out with gathers or not?
