Grace Kelly’s Wedding (Dress)

The thread on the Grace Kelly exhibit got me wondering more about the wedding dress in the photograph.

I think that is actually the dress she wore for the civil ceremony, which was required by law in Monaco. Her church wedding dress was much grander.

This dress was designed by Helen Rose, costume designer for MGM Studios, who did the clothes for four of Kelly’s films. The two women exchanged design ideas and used one of the ball gowns from ‘High Society’ as a starting point for the design.

The gown took six weeks to complete and involved 35 craftspeople from MGM’s wardrobe department.

The work was all top-secret and the resulting gown was a gift from MGM, which also provided the dress worn for the civil ceremony, although I don’t know if that was designed by Rose. For Jonathan, here are the shoes she wore.

From THIS SITE it explains “As an agreement with MGM, Grace and Rainier's wedding was to be filmed and then released as a movie back in America. The agreement was made because Grace had to break her 7 year contract with MGM. To say the least the wedding was beautiful, despite the cameras and high powered lights. Although it's said that Grace herself hated every moment of her wedding.”

The wedding was April 19, 1956. The dress was donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, because Kelly was born in Philadelphia.

I remember reading somewhere that MGM also paid money for the wedding because Monaco was on the verge of being bankrupt at the time and couldn't afford a lavish 'fairytale' wedding.

The lovely pink suit was worn at the Civil Wedding, which was held the day before the church wedding. It was at the V&A exhibit, and it was really wonderful- so feminine and pretty. Grace's shoes and hat were also on display, Grace had very narrow feet!
It was always denied by the Palace that any kind of dowry was paid by Grace's family, however I understand documents have come to light stating that there was a dowry, of about $2 million. Grace came from a very wealthy family! I suppose like a lot of Europe after WWII, Monaco had fallen on somewhat hard times.
