I have been researching an old set of curling irons and their heater and in passing have come across some neat anecdotal information.
Bobby pins were first introduced to America in 1916. The very first hair dryers were vacuum cleaners adapted for drying hair.
The founder of L'Oreal, French chemist Eugene Schueller, invented the first synthetic hair dye in 1907. He named his new hair dye product "Aureole".
This information is from About.Com.
Generally, Hiram Maxim, the designer of the machine gun, is credited with the first known patent for the curling iron in 1866.
The above is from eHow.
Then there’s this site an interesting history of hair around the word SITE complete with opera music.
And, in tracing the company that made the heater ( electric heaters were typically produced later than the curlers and adapted) I learned the same company manufactured many “quackery” medical items, which led me to THIS fascinating site - "The Turn Of The Century Electrotherapy Museum."
