"Hairspray" Charity Auctions

I thought you lived in New York Janine, not Mars!!!

This is from the about to be released film version of the Broadway play version of the John Waters 1987 film Hairspray.

I believe it was just released, Friday maybe? I am COVETING that pink & black polka dot sundress Britanny Snow wore!! Thanks for the link, Jody, I'm going to blog that tomorrow for my eVintage blog (always struggling to come up w/ themes!).

Too bad they are not vintage dresses. Was watching the making of. They covered the making of dresses and hairstyling.... I am hoping the film creates more interest in vintage.

Just got the latest Vogue. And vintage is still in.

The Travolta stuff seems to be bringing the most $$. Wonder if I'll be able to drag hubby to this...he watched Dreamgirls reluctantly the other night and actually liked it!

To some people New York City IS Mars, Jonathan!

OK, I get it. It's a remake of the original that I saw 20 years ago in the theaters and really like.

Believe me, there's no way to NOT know about the Broadway play version if you live here. Ever since the play came out this town has been plastered with ads for it. So many and for so long that I never pay attention to them.

Also, since the movie was so great and I don't give a crap about Broadway musicals like that, I had no interest in seeing it.

How can they even think to top a Waters film with Divine, Deborah Harry, and Sonny Bono??

Now, if they did a Broadway version or remake of "Polyester" then I might go. :hysterical:

I saw the play on Broadway and it was fantastic. The Divine role was played by Harvey Firestein and he was hilarious. I originally saw the movie too and loved it as well, but it was Waters' most commercial film (and I think it still is) so I can see why it translated well into the play and then back into a safer 'family' movie. Although I have to say I am a little worried about Travolta in this one... I just don't see it, but he has surprised me before.

If you were in Toronto last summer you kept running into them filming all over the place. I only went into Toronto three times and all three times they had blocked off some road to film some scene!

I thought "Serial Mom" was his most commercial film?

Regarding Broadway singin' & dancin' blockbusters, I'm just not into them. I wouldn't even go see "The Producers" and the movie is one of my favorites. Geez, it was my PARENTS who got me into that one 30 years ago, as they both love wacky comedies. I heard they did away the LSD character for Broadway. Another reason not to go! Dick Shawn was great in the film - well, they all were.

So, the "Hairspray" remake is a FAMILY film? :asleep:

My family and I went to see the movie on Friday afternoon. It was hard for us to sit still and not get up singing and dancing but you have to know our family. We listen to this era of music all the time as well as lots of other music. I thought Travolta was excellent in the movie. My daughters enjoyed it as well and the actor who played the heartthrob, Linc, was Zac Efron from the Disney movie High School Musical so there was something there for all of us.

It also brought up a lot of questions from our girls, age 10 and almost 9, about why the negro kids were roped off from the white kids. We wound up teaching a much needed history lesson to our girls so that alone was a great benefit of going to the movie.

I agree, Jonathan, Travolta is one of the things holding me and hubby back. We've refused to PAY to see a Travolta film since Battlefield Earth came out, which, BTW, we had free passes to see and still wanted our money back!
I had to wait for The Punisher (ok, so I like action films!) to come out on TV before I could see it, and was glad I didn't pay to see it, no matter how much Tom Jayne's ripply torso offset Travolta's, well, Travolta-ness.
Hopefully a few dozen pounds of foam rubber will hide him enough to get over that hang-up...and hopefully, too, he's channeling his old Danny Zuko Grease self and not his post Pulp Fiction choices.

When did Battlefield Earth come out??

I liked Travolta in Pulp Fiction. He made a cool looking hitman bein' all greasy & flabby as he was. (is)

I though he looked best in "Carrie." :love008:

Then there's "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble" :hysterical:

Travolta is one of those stars that makes bombs like Face Off and Battlefield Earth and you think he is talentless and then he does something to redeem himself, like Pulp Fiction, or Primary Colors.

In the education business, that's called "the teachable moment" and it's when real lessons hit home.

My local little theater is now doing West Side Story and they are getting slammed in the press for eliminating any and all mention of the cultural/ethnic tensions that are so much a part of the story.

I Love that matchbook shirt that's up for bids.

I went to see it this afternoon and really loved it. Okay, Travolta was a little weird, but the rest of the movie was great.

I can't believe that they didn't use some vintage in it, as some of the dresses and skirts were perfect. In fact, this skirt is in the scene where the Black dancers are having the party:
