Halle Bros. men\'s robe- dating?

Today's mystery...

What era is this men's paisley robe from? It has an older looking tag that states "The Halle Bros. Co." which was a Cleveland Dept store that was open for about 100 yrs. The seams are all encased- no serging. The thing that throws me is there is a seam tag that says 100% cotton and care instructions. So it has to be 70's then, right? Thoughts? Many thanks!

Josette

They made paisley bath robes like this for 50 years, so you have to go by things like materials and colours used, the tags, font, store history etc. 100% cotton sounds pre 70s to me - I would expect a blend by then, and I assume the care instructions aren't the universal symbols, but rather 'wash in cold water' or 'dry clean only' kind of instructions?

It looks maybe mid 60s? to me because of the colour combination -- but that's a guess.

care label

Right, I agree with all that you both said. Thus my confusion at finding this tag. It is fairly faded but it reads" Machine wash seperately, wash gentle, no chlorine bleach, tumble dry low, remove promptly, do not wring, cool iron, 100% cotton" No other symbols shown.

As Jonathan said, these can be hard to date - I agree with '60s too, and that was the height of paisley popularity but if we see the care label it will make it easier. The label you've shown is an older style that the robe.

Ah, cross posted - that tag looks pretty modern to me so it could be post'80s but I'll stick with '60s or more modern. Hard to tell on available information but it doesn't look old.

Now I'm thinking late 60's due to this info on Halle Bros. Co. on wikipedia:

"Suffering from an overbuilt flagship, the abandonment of Downtown Cleveland and overexpansion into the outlying areas, the company was sold to Marshall Field's in 1970, under which it deteriorated, falling behind local rivals Higbee's and May Company.....Field's did attempt to modernize Halle's look, investing in a brand make-over campaign in the 1970s, including retiring Halle's traditional Old English Script logo to a new logo which matched Marshall Field's logo, however same store sales continued to slide."

In November 1981 Field's sold Halle's, then it was liquidated in '82.

I made a skirt & vest outfit out of almost that exact same cotton paisley fabric, right down to the colors, although my fabric had a bit more blue in it, when I was either a freshman or a sophomore in high school. So, that would be 1969 to 1970-ish. And that is when I think your robe dates to. The colorway, even without the outfit I made, looks much more late 60s than any earlier. It looks to be in lovely condition!
