hat help - need to confirm memory of original owner\'s niece!

bought from the great niece of original owner, one wedding hat. date? neice said she believed her to be married in india in 1911 (and divorced soon after, when she returned to the UK and lied about her age to train as a nurse for wwI).. this seems pretty feasible to me but i wanted some 2nd opinions
i have quite a few pieces from this ladies wardrobe - one particular blouse of hers which was a real puzzler and i asked about ages ago.

quick snaps of the hat, plus butter box it came in(it is clean btw!):

and the original thread re: blouse i was convinced was earlier but had dress size 14 tag rather than bust size (which i have only just got around to dealing with again, lol!)

never mind blouse for now, do we think info given to me by niece re: wedding date is correct?

TIA! :)

I'm afraid I can't help with the dating, but is lovely and in great condition!! Perhaps, the owners name was Betty Botter...but I digress.

Good luck!

That's ~lovely~ Harriet, and the 1911 sure seems plausible to me too. Battenburg lace, and the lining looks like it is very well preserved!

i love the puffy things too janine!:) it is a lovely hat isn't it, and i also love the fact that she must have lugged it back from india. (i obviously wondered what happened to the dress, as i don't have that but her niece didn't know where it went..) it is in pretty good nick, with one age spot on the silk crepe on the crown and a few browny areas to the lace. i decided to keep it for my own collection and glad it was what i thought !

thanks everyone - i was 99% sure 1911 was correct but i just thought if it was what i was basing the rest of my dating assumptions on then i ought to get a second opinion, as i'm really shaky the earlier things get.

i love buying things directly from the owners as i have a huge fascination with social history and it's great to hear the stories, but sometimes if people have inherited clothing/accessories and a few generations have passed between the original owner and the current, the dates they recall seem to sometimes have slipped a few years with every generation!

now i just need to date the rest of her things...

:spin:

he dates they recall seem to sometimes have slipped a few years with every generation!

I know :)

Especially with all that 1950s polyester doubleknit floating around!
