Hat help, please?

This Play Topper hat's not worth a lot of $$, but I'm havin' a hard time with what to call both the material it's made of and the style. It "looks" like a cello straw, but it's really not. It's like a cello layer bonded to thin paper, giving it more body and stiffness than plain cello. Or a thin material coated with varnish-like stuff. The strips are very wide and crinkled--it looks for all the world like crinkly paper mache' strips. Hopefully this look shows up in the lightened photo. I have a LOT of hats, and haven't ever seen this material before.

And the styling looks very much like a turban, with the wrapping strips and the shape of the front. But the overall shape is more like a pillbox... Can I call it a "pillbox turban"? And this is 60s? (Has an elastic band to secure.) Thanks!

I don't know much but I think it looks like others I've seen from the 60's - that's a really cool hat! What a neat look!

Thanks, coffeegirl! I really like the hat; it fits me and looks great on--quite chic, actually. I haven't been able to find any other hats online made of this stuff--wish I knew what it is and what to call it....

i'd say 60s Anne. i've had similar hats in the past, and we've just referred to them as plastic straw-look hats, and they have sold that way.

it does have a turban-esche look, doesn't it? kind of like a flat bubble hat. but not.

i need to go iron now. :BAGUSE:

I can't help with the fabric, but i do love it.

have you tried it with the bow in front, Anne, and a bit further up on the forehead?

sorry.. i watch too much 60's Perry Mason and all those ladies in the court room wear hats.. lol..

The tag is where the bow is, and I have always been told that is the back of a hat. Would a tag ever be placed at the front of the hat? If so, I can try it the other way around. When I try this on my head, it looks and feels right with the bow at the back, but I could be wrong, of course.

And it does have a "wet" look to it. Very strange material....

Von, I'm hooked on Perry Mason, too! We watched it all the time when I was a kid, and I watched it faithfully first on TNT, then on Hallmark when they re-ran it for several years. My DH has bought me the first 2 seasons on DVD. We think they just released another, so that'll be my Christmas gift.
